Curriculum Intent

Our Art curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, build technical skill, and develop confident, independent learners who can express ideas visually with purpose and originality. At Key Stages 3 and 4, students engage with a broad range of artistic practices, enabling them to understand, analyse, and respond critically to the work of diverse artists and contexts.

We aim for students to develop mastery across a variety of media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, and mixed media. Through structured skill-building and experimentation, students refine their techniques while gaining an understanding of formal elements such as line, tone, texture, colour, and composition.

A central aspect of our curriculum is encouraging students to think creatively and take ownership of their ideas. From skills and approaches developed in KS3, by KS4 students are supported to plan, develop, and realise personal projects, fostering independence and resilience. They are encouraged to experiment, take risks, and explore multiple approaches, seeing mistakes as part of the creative process.

Sketchbooks play a vital role in this journey, acting as a space for investigation, reflection, and idea development. Alongside this, students produce larger-scale outcomes that allow them to apply and showcase their skills and concepts in more ambitious and resolved pieces.

By the end of KS4, students will have developed the confidence to generate and refine their own artistic ideas, communicate ideas visually, and demonstrate an informed appreciation of art in its many forms. They will be equipped with transferable creative skills that support further study.
