Students at Blessed Robert Sutton Catholic Voluntary Academy celebrated a fantastic set of GCSE results.

Jake Heath, Acting Deputy Headteacher, said: “We are immensely proud of our students’ achievements in this year’s GCSE examinations. Their results reflect not only their academic abilities but also their resilience, determination, and commitment. Our students have shown incredible perseverance and dedication, and it is heartening to see their hard work rewarded with such excellent results.

“This year, our students have excelled across a wide range of subjects. These results are a true reflection of the close partnership between our dedicated staff, supportive parents, and hard-working students. Their tireless efforts, coupled with the unwavering support of our parents and carers, have been instrumental in achieving these outstanding results.

“As our students look ahead to the next stage of their education, whether that be A-levels, vocational training, or entering the workforce, we are confident that they are well-prepared for the future. The skills and knowledge they have acquired at Blessed Robert Sutton will serve as a strong foundation for whatever path they choose to follow.

“I would like to congratulate each one of our students on their achievements. We are extremely proud of you all and wish you the very best in your future endeavours. We would like to make a special mention of Olha T, who joined our school in June 2022 after arriving from Ukraine. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new country, language, and curriculum, Olha has shown an unwavering commitment to her studies. Her exceptional results include 7s in English, and 9’s in Mathematics, Religious Education, and Physical Education. Olha’s achievements are a true testament to her resilience, and we are incredibly proud of her success.”

A in Maths A-level for Year 10 student

A 15-year-old student at Blessed Robert Sutton Catholic Voluntary Academy is celebrating achieving an A in her Maths A-level, which she has taken three years early.

Evangelene Puthussery, who is in Year 10, was encouraged to take the qualification by her maths teacher and head of year, Amanda McDowall.

Evangelene said: “Mrs McDowall taught me in Year 7 and I took Further Maths GCSE in Year 8 and got a grade 8 and she thought that the next step would be for me to take my A-level in Maths. She gave me a one-hour lesson every week and I couldn’t have done this without her.

“I went into school today to get my result and Mrs McDowall was there as well as the Deputy Headteacher and the Head of Maths. They were all with me when I opened the envelope. When I saw my result I was over the moon. The plan now is to go on and sit my GCSEs next year and I would like to study Biology, Chemistry and Further Maths at A-level. I want to study Medicine at university and become a doctor. My mum is a nurse and I just like the idea of being able to help people, I think it would be a privilege. My teachers have been so supportive, particularly Mrs McDowall and they are all really proud of me.”

Mr Heath congratulated Evangelene on her achievement.

He said: “Securing an A in A-level Maths while still in Year 10 is an outstanding achievement, yet Evangelene remains incredibly humble. Her success is the result of unwavering effort and determination, she really is a model student. Evangelene has a bright future ahead of her, and as a school, we are committed to supporting her every step of the way.”

We are pleased to announce that we have won a pioneering award for our outstanding mental health and wellbeing provision. The school has been awarded Gold standard by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools.

Blessed Robert Sutton provides a wide range of activities to boost the wellbeing of pupils and staff. These include rolling out a universal program of mental health support which means that every pupil has a 1:1 conversation about wellbeing each term.

Form time takes place at the start and end of the day to allow for pastoral support to be given during both sessions.

Blessed Robert Sutton school also leads wellbeing discussions and training both in the St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust, and nationally, and has developed a culture in which leaders ask themselves ‘are staff, pupils and parents getting the best deal’ – including around their wellbeing.

Students at Blessed Robert Sutton Catholic Voluntary Academy are celebrating their GCSE results.

Miss O’Leary, Headteacher at Blessed Robert Sutton, said: “We are immensely proud of the work and achievements of this wonderful group of students. We understand the immense effort they have put in, and I am thrilled to see their results reflecting their abilities and potential. Our heartfelt congratulations go out to all of them, and sincere gratitude to our staff who have worked tirelessly to support and prepare them for these exams. This year has further reinforced our long-term trend of outstanding GCSE results.

“I extend my congratulations to all our students, express thanks to parents for their continued support, and acknowledge the dedication of the staff at Blessed Robert Sutton Catholic Voluntary Academy. Their hard work and commitment have yielded exceptional results. It is a true privilege to be a part of this community; our young people now possess the qualifications to open doors and take the next steps in their adult lives.

“Our ultimate goal is to provide the best opportunities for every young person in our care, enabling them to achieve their highest potential. Today’s results show that we have succeeded in this. We are incredibly proud of their achievements.”

We are delighted to be able to share with our pupils, parents and community that we have been shortlisted for the TES Secondary School of the Year 2023.

Blessed Robert Sutton Catholic Voluntary Academy rockets to become an ‘OUTSTANDING’ school in all categories, as graded by Ofsted.

We are immensely proud to announce that we have been judged by Ofsted to be an Outstanding school in all categories, following an inspection on 18 and 19 January 2023.

Previously rated Requires Improvement, the academy has undergone rapid transformation thanks to the relentless determination of leaders and staff in the school, the Trust, and the support of the local governing body.

Inspectors said that pupils are extremely proud to be part of this “highly ambitious school’ and that leaders have the highest expectations for pupils, who receive a “high quality” education.

The ‘Sutton Way’ was highlighted in the report, which focuses on academic excellence, spiritual development and social excellence and permeates throughout the school.

“Staff meet the needs of all pupils, including pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, exceptionally well. Staff welcome pupils warmly into school each morning. Relationships between adults and pupils are positive and respectful,” inspectors said.

The report said that pupils behave very well in lessons and around school and that they consistently exhibit the school’s values of kindness, love and respect.

“Pupils feel safe here. They know who to talk to if they have a concern. Poor behaviour and bullying are never tolerated. Pupils are highly focused in lessons and are keen to participate. They learn well because teaching is very effective. Teachers are highly knowledgeable. Pupils enjoy their lessons and are successful in many subjects,” inspectors said.

Headteacher Miss O’Leary was said to have brought about “phenomenal change” across the whole school since her appointment in 2019.

Inspectors said: “She and her senior team provide exceptional leadership. They lead by example, with sensitive and calm authority. They know what is best for their pupils.”

The curriculum at the school, which is part of the St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust, was described as “very broad and ambitious”.

“The vast majority of pupils now study the suite of subjects that make up the English baccalaureate in key stage 4. Subject leaders have carefully planned the curriculum so that pupils can learn new knowledge in a highly structured way. Lessons are extremely well sequenced to ensure pupils build on what they have learned before. Teachers plan lessons exceptionally well,” inspectors said.

Pupils’ understanding is checked frequently so that “no child is left behind” and teachers use a range of effective strategies and high quality resources to ensure that almost all pupils, including those with SEND, achieve exceptionally well, Ofsted said.

“Pupils have highly positive attitudes to their learning. They fully concentrate in lessons and low-level disruptive behaviour is rare. Pupils attend school regularly and punctuality levels are very high for all pupils. They love coming to school,” inspectors said.

The school’s personal, social and health education programme was described as “highly effective” and inspectors said that leaders provide pupils with effective careers advice and guidance, meaning that they are very well prepared for their next steps by the end of Year 11.

Inspectors said that safeguarding arrangements at the school were effective and that governance was a real strength of the school. They also said that staff are extremely proud to work at Blessed Robert Sutton.

Miss O’Leary said: “We have been on a mission to provide an excellent education for all of our wonderful students, which we have achieved with the support of our phenomenal, dedicated staff, the parents and carers of our students and governors.

“I am extremely proud of this report and the education we provide for all students at Robert Sutton. The outcome of this inspection is testament to the efforts of our entire school community, especially the hard work and positive attitude of our students and the commitment and service of our staff team.

“Given that the new inspection framework is much more rigorous and judgements harder to achieve, combined with the ongoing demands of the pandemic, it makes it even more pleasing that inspectors did not identify any areas for development.”

John Rimmer, Chair of Governors, said: “The Governors are incredibly proud of everything that has been achieved by the Headteacher, staff and pupils since the last inspection. It is a phenomenal achievement to produce such a big improvement in the performance of the school in such a short space of time.”

Kevin Gritton, Chief Executive Officer of the St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust, said: “We are absolutely delighted for the whole school community that the school has been graded as Outstanding in all areas by Ofsted. It is an incredible achievement and we know how much hard work has gone into this from Miss O’Leary and all of the staff, governors and pupils. It is also fantastic news for Blessed Robert Sutton pupils who start their journey at partner schools in our Trust, St Edward’s and Holy Rosary. As a Trust we will continue to support Blessed Robert Sutton, to ensure that the school continues to go from strength to strength.”
